Abstract

ABSTRACT

To analyze the scientific productions available in the literature regarding the benefits and difficulties of breastfeeding and the role of nursing in promoting exclusive breastfeeding until the sixth month of life. This is an integrative literature review, carried out in September 2020, by searching the databases: LILACS, SCIELO and BDENF, through the Virtual Health Library and the Capes Portal, based on intersections of the descriptors: “ Breastfeeding "," Benefits "," Difficulties "and" Nursing practice ". It became evident that there are factors that facilitate and hinder the practice of breastfeeding, therefore, one must take into account all aspects that permeate the social context, culture, family support and professional guidance. In this context, the role of nurses in prenatal care and in the puerperium is essential to provide clarifications and guidance in relation to the benefits of breastfeeding and the advantages for continuing this practice. It was observed that the realization of the practice of exclusive breastfeeding until the sixth month of life is permeated by several challenges, making it necessary to change the assistance in health institutions and the qualification of professionals, in order to implement and make the importance more visible of breastfeeding by the population.
