NURSING CHALLENGES IN PALLIATIVE CARE IN CANCER PATIENTS: AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW
Abstract
This study aimed to describe the limitations and challenges proposed to the nursing team during the care of
cancer patients in palliative care. An integrative literature review, conducted between May and June 2023, was
chosen in the databases BDENF, BINACIS, CUMED, IBECS, LILACS, MEDLINE/PubMed and Web of
Science. For the selection of studies, the following descriptors were used: "nursing care, neoplasms, palliative
care" and the alternative terms, "nursing care, palliative care", in English and Portuguese. A total of 12 articles
were selected to compose the review. Given the lack of nursing professionals specialized in palliative care,
challenges such as decision-making to start treatment directly impacts the nursing consultation, factors such
as the resistance of the family and patients to the beginning of the service are also limitations to nursing care.
Therefore, it was evidenced the need for strategies for the insertion of the family in palliative care, as well as
the training of more nursing professionals specialized in palliative oncological care.
