Abstract
Introduction: It is imperative to invest in studies on fake news in order to monitor the content disseminated and the search for improved information in the face of untruths, especially related to health during health crises. Objective: The study sought to analyze verified fake news as a strategy for dealing with the infodemic associated with COVID-19 in the Americas. Methodology: This is a document-based infodemiological study carried out using the Coronavirus Factus database, available on the Poynter Institute website. Data was collected from September 2022 to January 2023. In addition, the data was systematized in a database and analyzed descriptively. Results: Among the Americas, North America stands out for the highest numbers with 733 fake news stories. Facebook was the most expressive channel, followed by WhatsApp. At the same time, the dissemination format was wide-ranging with a variety of formats (audio, video, among others). There was a significant number of fake news stories in several countries in the Americas, especially in 2020, when the health crisis began, but it decreased in the following years. Conclusion: This shows that verifying this news is a powerful strategy to help contain the effects of fake news on health and society.
